GlaxoSmithKline has announced that they will stop making and marketing Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care as hundreds of lawsuits over the alleged effects of the products’ zinc levels wait to be heard.

The FDA has never issued a warning about zinc in denture creams, which received approval in the 1990s, but some of the millions of users claim that its inclusion has caused severe neurological problems. Many plaintiffs are said to have used tubes intended to last two months in just one week, exposing them to 45 times the recommended dose of zinc.

Although both Glaxo and Procter & Gamble, which makes Fixodent, make zinc-free version of their denture adhesives, P&G spokespeople say Fixodent contains half the amount of zinc Poligrip products contain.
