When it comes to elective cosmetic surgery, cost should not be the deciding factor in which doctor you go with. Anyone offering “basement bargain” prices on nose jobs or facelifts likely isn’t the most qualified person to be performing a potentially life-threatening and life-altering procedure. With that said, the actual cost of plastic surgery can vary greatly and it is possible to get great results for a little less, if you know the right questions to ask. So how can you not cut quality corners and safely save on a procedure?

First, do research and know what the ballpark price is for the specific procedure you want. USA Today reported that the Healthcare Blue Book offers prices for procedures in your area like Kelly Blue Book does for your car.

Then, find a hand full of board-certified plastic surgeons you would feel safe and comfortable working with in your city and schedule consultations. Once you have selected surgeons you would chose no matter the price, make the appointment. Most doctors offer free consultations to assess what you want done and will quote you a price on the procedure, which could possibly vary by the hundreds or even thousands. Also remember, because elective surgery isn’t covered by insurance, prices may be negotiable and cash will be preferred over a payment plan.

Whatever you do, don’t fall for coupons and deals on sites like Groupon and LivingSocial, which nowadays have low prices for things like injectables and fillers and even “liquid facelifts“. You only get this one body, treat it like it is—worth every penny.
