It was reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) last year that chin implants were the fastest growing cosmetic procedure in America. But for the year 2013, some plastic surgeons predict that cheek implants will be the new “it” cosmetic surgery, as they have seen a rapid growth in the request for better cheek structure.
Why cheek implants specifically? Well, in the quest for a more youthful-looking face in an ever older and competitive job market, facial bones play a major role in an aged appearance, says ASPS president Malcolm Z. Roth, MD. And just as the chin and jawline show signs of aging, deflated cheeks do as well. “The cheeks change significantly with age,” says Boston facial plastic surgeon Jeffrey Spiegel, MD. “You lose volume and your face starts to look like a triangle (wide at the jaw and narrow at the cheeks and temples), where an upside down triangle is the sign of a young face.”
While fillers can do a lot to add volume to the temples and cheek area, they aren’t the permanent solution someone might be looking for. Also, older patients who are looking for a fix, say those in their 60s and 70s might find that the amount of volume needed to tighten and restore volume in the face is more than can be provided with fillers alone. This is all why plastic surgeons say cheek implants are on the rise.
Cheek augmentation isn’t necessarilyright for everyone.
