Have a chipped tooth or an obvious stain? Bonding is a one-appointment procedure that solves many smile problems—from chipped, broken and too-short teeth to gaps and discoloration. By applying a tooth-colored resin to teeth, and hardening it with a special high-intensity light, your cosmetic dentist can fix age-related damage and restore your smile.
Shortening your teeth to eliminate chips can actually age your smile. So if your dentist offers to smooth it out by filing, just say no! Instead, opt for bonding to restore the tooth’s natural appearance.
The procedure is simple. To conceal imperfections, your dentist can sculpt a tooth-colored resin over the nooks and crannies of your teeth. To prep, your dentist will gently etch your tooth’s surface so bonding will adhere and apply a primer. Next, your dentist will apply a putty-like resin to your tooth in layers and sculpt it to fir the rest of your smile. To complete the bonding, a high-intensity light will be used to harden the resin. And in about an hour, you’re ready to go. Keep in mind, bonding can chip. It’s important to avoid using your teeth for anything other than eating.
