Last year was all about “crazy colors” when it came to hair. Denim blues, steel grays and rose gold shades somehow seamlessly translated from runway to real life, as it seemed like everyone was experimenting.
“Shades are an evolution. It’s hard to say if one shade is out and one is in,” says Kate Reid, director COLOR.ME by KEVIN.MURPHY. “But there are more microtrends now than ever before.”

One big trend “shift” Reid has seen recently: pastel shades getting a bit denser and more permanent. “People have experimented with these shades and now they’ve decided they want to commit. Rather than quick fashion with temporary hair color, they’re choosing more permanent fashion shades to wear. It’s kind of like the ‘new classic.’”
Like most trends, Reid says she also sees differences in what’s popular depending on which coast you’re on. “I feel West Coast is all about balayage, effortless and hair painting, which is still a huge movement. The influence of the beach, Hollywood celebrities and outdoor lifestyle really shapes that consumer. On the East, I notice more striking, bold blonds, including white and fashion experimental colors. Hair is making more of a statement than a bag or shoes!”
