Panera’s Latest Announcement Just Made It the Newest Go-To Health Destination featured image

If the cocktail of the predictable green juice and newly surfacing Buddha bowl on your news feed hasn’t spurred you to make healthier food choices yet, the latest news from Panera Bread might make it a little easier: The long-time favorite café, known for its delicious soups, salads and, well, bread, just announced the removal of all artificial ingredients from its U.S. menu, making it “100 percent clean.”

On it’s website, Panera refers to its newfound “No No List”, a list of 96 ingredients and additive classes that will no longer be found within its recipes, which includes artificial flavors and colors, aspartame, added caffeine, nitrates/nitrites, partially hydrogenated oils, artificial trans fats and sucralose to name a few. To walk the public through the huge change, the brand also includes “clean food milestones” within its press release, explaining that within the process of editing the menu and making it “100 percent clean”, Panera:

• Reviewed more than 450 ingredients, delving several levels into the supply chain to ensure the removal of all artificial flavors, preservatives, sweeteners and colors from artificial sources

• Reformulated 122 ingredients, resulting in changes to the majority of Panera’s bakery-cafe recipe

• Partnered with more than 300 food vendors on the clean food journey to innovate solutions, ranging from ingredient replacements to rethinking how foods are prepared

Ron Shaich, founder and CEO of Panera Bread says that offering a clean menu free from all artificial flavors, preservatives, sweeteners and colors from artificial sources is one way to help guests feel confident about the food they eat at the popular chain café. “Panera’s clean food is foundational to serving food as it should be,” he adds. “This initiative required us to restock the pantry with 100% clean ingredients,” Sara Burnett, Director of Wellness, adds in the press release. “We are proud of accomplishing this feat, but we are even more proud of the potential impact we can have on the broader food industry. We continue to challenge our peers to make a comprehensive commitment to 100% clean ingredients.”
