Nighttime is the optimal time to slow down and reverse the signs of aging. As we sleep, our skin is restoring itself and reversing the damage done during the waking hours. The sleeping hours are the secret to slowing down aging, and choosing the right ingredients is as important as when you use them. As we sleep, the skin is not at rest-it’s actually working harder than during the day to regenerate and renew. Between the hours of 1 and 4 a.m., skin cells are most active.
Here’s our ideal nighttime routine:
• Cleanse the skin to remove dirt, makeup, oil and impurities. “Look for a pH-balanced facial cleanser. One with lactic acid will gently exfoliate the skin-a big plus,” says Great Neck, NY, dermatologist Jeannette Graf, MD.
• Apply retinol to clean, dry skin.
• Apply a serum or gel (based on your main skin concerns, like anti-aging, acne or redness).
• Moisturize with a hyaluronic acid-rich hydrator. “If your skin is still dry. You may need a rich firming moisturizer,” adds Dr. Graf.
