It’s common knowledge that mascara should be thrown out after three months, however, not all of us are good about actually following through with that. Nonetheless, it’s still safe to say we toss those tiny tubes more often than our other makeup products, but what if we told you that your old mascara wands can go to good use even after it’s lash-lifting lifespan has worn out?
Good news: It’s true—your used up mascara wands can actually end up helping animals in need. A wildlife rescue organization in North Carolina recently took to Facebook to post a plea for donations of old mascara wands. According to the post, the tiny bristles on your mascara brush can actually help remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of animals. “They work great because the bristles are so close together,” the caption explains.

Unsurprisingly, after Savannah Trantham, cofounder of the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge, posted the touching message, it immediately gained more than 50,000 shares on social media. “We are stunned at the outpouring of support,” cofounder Kimberly Brewster said in a press release. “I was brought to tears by the messages thanking us for saving wild animals.”
According to GoodHousekeeping.com, you should wash your old mascara wands with soap and water before mailing them to the rescue center at the below address:

If you don’t have any old makeup brushes laying around, it’s still possible to help animals at the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge by donating one of the items on their wish list. What better time to help out our furry little friends in need than the present?
