Oprah Is Getting Into the Food Business

By ·

**UPDATE January 27, 2017
Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is teaming up with one of the biggest names in the food biz, Kraft Heinz to create a line of refrigerated, ready-to-eat meals and snacks for U.S. consumers. The main goal: to make healthy food more accessible. (This will not be tied to Winfrey’s current partnership with Weight Watchers.)

According to a press release, the joint venture is called Mealtime Stories and will offer “real, nutritious” products with one big caveat: 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to charities that fight hunger. Leave it to the queen of philanthropy to blend two of her favorite passions (food and charity) into one mega business. Bravo!

There’s no word yet as to when the products will hit store shelves, but we’re excited to see what the two powerhouses come up with.

Since joining Weight Watchers last year, Oprah Winfrey has lost 30 pounds. And, she’s learned a lot along the way.

Recently she joined a Web-call with a small group of fellow Weight Watchers members, during which she revealed one of her most important weight-loss secrets: Embrace the buddy system. According to Good Morning America, who had exclusive access to the call, the 62-year-old media mogul said that having a program partner has been crucial to her success. And in Oprah’s case, that person is Stedman Graham, who’s also her life partner.

“He kept asking me what every point was, and I said, ‘Why don’t you just join?’” Oprah said on the call, adding, “For me, it’s so much better when other people are also counting points. We do hold each other accountable.”

As an ambassador for the organization, Oprah previously shared a few weight-loss tricks with Today that anyone can employ.

1. Opt for fish. “Seafood is your friend!” she said. Oprah said she loves Asian sea bass, but often opts for cod, which is easier to find in the U.S. It’s low-fat and full of essential nutrients like vitamin B12 and omega fatty acids.

2. Try under-the-radar veggies. “I love jicama because you get a crunch,” she said. It’s low in calories but high in nutrients and is very versatile when cooking—you can use it in salads, soups, stir-fries and more.

3. Make cauliflower “mashed potatoes” instead of the real thing. Oprah prefers cauliflower mash, which has a lower Weight Watchers points value.

There’s also early news that Oprah has plans to launch a line of food items and bottled drinks, including energy drinks, coconut water and lemonade. According to The New York Daily News, Oprah will develop products (everything from dairy and fish to baked goods and fruit) under the name Oprah’s Kitchen. There’s no news yet on when consumers can expect to see the products, but stay tuned to NewBeauty for updates!
