New technology now gives cosmetic dentists the ability to make porcelain veneers in a single appointment. This gives you the option of having a chipped, fractured or worn tooth repaired with the strongest and most durable porcelain materials currently available.
In the past, this type of procedure would require two or more visits, and you would need to wear a temporary veneer; or a less permanent restoration may have been done with bonding, using a plastic tooth-colored filling material. Bonding is more porous than porcelain and is thus subject to staining and discoloring. It also requires more maintenance than porcelain, as it is more subject to breakage.
Using CEREC technology, your dentist captures an image of your tooth and loads it into the computer; he then prepares your tooth and captures an image of the prepared tooth; next, he designs the veneer, and finally, he sends it to a milling machine where the veneer is created from a block of porcelain. Finally, he custom stains and polishes it, and bonds it to your tooth.
