If you’re in the market for an expensive perfume, Guerlain has one that will set you back more than $300. But that price pales in comparison to what one particular Guerlain fragrance flacon sold for last week.
French auction house Toledano, offering 250 different vintage and antique perfume bottles, had an 1870 Guerlain bottle engraved with the brand’s original address within their catalog. After a round of in-person and international phone bidding, the bottle went to an anonymous buyer for a record-breaking $54,500.
And that’s just for the bottle. The actual perfume was used up or evaporated a long, long time ago.
That makes the $317 price tag on Guerlain’s Shalimar Parfum sound downright reasonable. (After all, you get a whole ounce of actual perfume!)
