New Year’s Eve is a fabulous time of year and one when you should look nothing short of, well…fabulous. However, that doesn’t mean you need to spend hours applying your makeup. Here to share an easy, party-perfect makeup look that flatters all skin tones is Ashleigh Ciucci, celebrity makeup artist for Hair Room Service. She says when it comes to a quick, classic look; black eyeliner and a red lip is a winning combo.

“Black liquid liner and bold red lips are a classic look—a classic look with a bad reputation for being intimidating to apply. There are quick short cuts that make applying this lip and eye a snap,” she says. Here are her steps for getting this look:

Liquid Eyeliner
“Start with a waterproof cream shadow on the lid. This will give the liquid liner something to stick to and will provide all day staying power. I love MAC Paints ($18.50) in Untitled (for fair skin) or Bamboom (for medium to dark skin.)

Liquid liner pens are all the rage and for good reason; they’re practically fool proof.   With a super fine point and perfectly opaque pigment, Smashbox Liquid Liner Pen ($22) in Jet Black is my go to.

To use the pen with ease, use the shape of the felt tip to your advantage: when sketching from the inner eye to the outside corner, point the tip towards the inner corner of the eye.  When creating your wing, flip the pen so the tip is pointed towards the outside corner of your eye.  And remember, the perfect wing is created by following an invisible line from the outside corner of your lower lashline up.

Finally, don’t try to get your straight line in one fell swoop. Drag the pen along your lashline (with the felt tip held parallel to the base of your lashes) in small dashes like you’re sketching.  It’s much easier to “connect the dots” than to try and drag a perfect line all at once,” says Ciucci.

Bold Red Lips
“Part of the mystique of the red lip is finding the perfect shade. Fair skinned ladies look great in coral-y or candy apple reds. Medium skinned gals should go for true reds or reds that have a bit of berry to them. Dark skinned women should opt for deep bricks and burgundies.

Lip liners are great for keeping your lip line clean and extending the wear of your red.  However, I have a different technique for using the pencil to your advantage. First, fill in your lip with the pencil (don’t worry about doing your clean edge yet.)  Apply your lipstick with a lip brush; with such a bold color, the precision of the brush is a must. Next, by smooshing your lips together it will give you an idea of how the product will fill out your lip shape. Finally, go back with your freshly sharpened lip pencil to clean up the edge.

Blot your lips on a tissue and apply another layer of color. Repeat one more time for a full pigment punch!” says Ciucci.
