Known germaphobe Naomi Campbell was grilled by Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen on her sanitizing addiction and being a clean freak long before it was in fashion. While having the supermodel as a solo guest on his show, he played a custom-created game called “Do You Wipe It Down?” to see which items get the Campbell-style clean. In true Naomi form, the iconic model revealed a special disinfecting practice when it comes to her delivered fruits and veggies.
When asking if her groceries get a wipe before coming inside the house, Cohen also inquired as to whether the runway veteran went grocery shopping for herself. Surprisingly, Campbell says she actually misses grocery stores, but thanks to the quarantine and self-isolation recommendations, she’s become a recent convert to the grocery delivery phenomenon.
“This is what I learned during the quarantine—to order in. I wasn’t into it before, because I like to pick out my own stuff. I really do like to go to the grocery stores, or did during normal times. But…I’ve been using Instacart. I know how to do it now.”
The star also shared the extra steps she takes to make sure her produce in particular is safe. “There’s a whole thing when it comes home. It’s a wipe down, the outside of the bag and if it’s vegetable and fruit, it’s washed in apple cider [vinegar]. Every bag, every bottle is wiped down. Nothing is coming through the door without getting wiped.”
The practice makes sense, as washing produce in apple cider vinegar is said to help remove bacteria and pesticides. However, the Centers for Disease Control has not cited apple cider vinegar as being a useful tool against the coronavirus. Their recommendations only advise washing your hands before, during and after preparing food and while eating and have not released any information on the benefits of washing or soaking food items before consuming. Nonetheless, we get why Campbell is erring on the side of caution.
It should come as no surprise that Campbell takes her sanitizing routine so seriously. Back in July 2019, long before we’d ever heard the word coronavirus uttered, the star shared a video on her YouTube channel that showed her disinfecting every part of her first-class seat on an airplane. At the time, that video received a ton of comments from viewers who found her routine to be excessive. Back in 2019 her cleanliness may have seemed extreme, but knowing what we know now, Naomi was way ahead of the curve.
