I used to think that my search for the perfect lip balm was relentless, but I recently realized how deeply obsessed I am with finding an amazing mascara. I’ve definitely discovered a few great ones in my time, both as a beauty editor and before, but they’ve all come with their hard-to-ignore flaws.
Unlike most mascaras, Imju (pronounced like emu) Fiberwig is made up of tiny fibers that coat lashes in lengthening layers. When I applied it, I was immediately impressed by how un-messy and clump-free it is, no matter how many layers I added. Touted as “Paint-On False Lashes,” I couldn’t argue: the result was the longest, most flirtatiously fluttery lashes I’d ever seen on myself.
I had to test the no-smudge promise, so I did what you’re not supposed to do with makeup: I slept in it. (Gasp!) Come morning, my lashes were still lovely, and there was no black mess under my eyes or on my pillow. It didn’t come off until I gently slid off the fibers with warm water. But here’s the wonderfully weird contradiction-even though it comes of voluntarily with warm water, Fiberwig is humidity-, sweat- and tear-resistant.
OK, so at $24, it’s thrice as expensive as drugstore mascaras. But I’m so spellbound by Fiberwig’s superiority that I’ll find a way to fit it in my budget. I’m thinking of running for president of the cult, too.
