For some actresses, their smile really is their money maker. If you’ve ever wondered which star has the most attractive smile, data just revealed the answer. Expressdentist.com set out to use technology and data to identify which actress currently listed on Forbes’s top-paid actresses had the most attractive smile.

Attractiveness can often be subjective. However, Express Dentist used data to come to an objective conclusion. The company used “a computer vision algorithm to approximate the geometric golden ratio of each celebrity’s smile and provides a whiteness ranking for each celebrity’s teeth based on RGB estimates.”

According to the data, Ellen Pompeo has the most attractive smile. She scored a 5.91 out of 10 for overall smile attractiveness. She got a golden ratio score of over 50% and a teeth witness score of 87.75%. Gal Gadot was runner-up. However, she had the highest teeth whiteness score, with a 92.89%. Melissa McCarthy came in third place, followed by Scarlett Johansson. Johannson scored the highest golden ratio score with 62.43%. Elizabeth Moss came in fifth place.

Rockville, MD cosmetic dentist Joe Kravitz, DDS explained that “The golden ratio, phi, was first written in a report called Elements, by Euclid around 300 BC. The golden ratio has international recognition as some of the most attractive structures, art, and designs are more aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.” Essentially, it’s a geometric formula on length versus width.

This ratio is applied to dentistry as it relates to your front teeth. “Beauty and attractiveness can be measured in balance and proportion,” said New York cosmetic dentist Jason Kasarsky, DDS. “Keeping it simple, the golden ratio in dentistry is [when] the top front central tooth is 1.6 larger than the lateral tooth next to it.”

New York cosmetic dentist Nargiz Schmidt, DDS agreed that the categories evaluated do in fact contribute to the attractiveness of a person’s smile. Dr. Kasarsky is on board with the scores and methodology used in the study. In Dr. Kravitz’s opinion, the whiteness ranking is not fully accurate since “every tooth in the smile has a different color and value.”

There are a few other components Dr. Kasarsky thinks are essential to an attractive smile. These include the shape of the teeth, the balance of right and left and gum display. Dr. Kravitz also thinks it’s important to account for other aspects of the smile. “When we complete smile designs with veneers, crowns or dental implants, we account for the smile, lips, teeth and gums. We seek to balance the golden ratio to beautify the smile from the inside out,” said Dr. Kravitz.

It’s worth noting that Dr. Kasarsky pointed out each of these actresses appears to have gotten work done on their smiles throughout their careers. Dr. Schmidt noted that each smile is unique and suits the specific person. “When I ask my patients to bring a photo of a smile they want, I emphasize to find a celebrity that resembles them. There are more than 50 different shades of white, and it is important to choose the right ‘white’ and the right shape of the teeth as well,” said Dr. Schmidt.

While the golden ratio is helpful, Dr. Schmidt warned that chasing it too ardently could lead to overly aggressive treatment, which ultimately may not reap the desired results.
