Think Facebook and Twitter are just for connecting with old high school sweethearts or blasting your opinion on the latest news story? Not so fast. Turns out more people seeking information and advice about cosmetic procedures are turning to these social media outlets for answers.

According to a poll conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, surgeons say about 42 percent of patients got their information from social media in 2011, up from just 29 percent in 2010. Those who reached out to friends fell from 63 percent in 2010 to 48 percent in 2011.

While the increase in conversation is encouraging, we caution that the best way to determine which treatment is best for you is to speak directly with a qualified, board-certified physician.

Want to connect with a physician? If you have a question for a doctor, ask it on our Facebook page or Twitter feed, and we’ll ask a qualified beauty expert to fill us in with the right information. Every Wednesday, we’ll post their answer right here on DailyBeauty.
