Mini-facial procedures are more in demand than ever. A variation of traditional procedures that entail shorter incisions and less downtime, these rejuvenating treatments offer permanent improvement to correct the signs of aging. “Smaller surgical procedures have their place and these techniques are great for the younger patient—those in their 40s and early 50s—who are starting to see some age-related changes but are not ready for or don’t require a more traditional procedure just yet,” says La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD.

About 20 years ago, the idea of smaller surgical procedures first emerged and today plastic surgeons are meeting the demands of younger patients (the 40 something patient) who desire the benefits of these mini-procedures. Modified versions of more traditional surgeries have come and gone—think the feather lift, barbed suture lifts and even string lifts—because they overpromised and under-delivered. Thee procedures that are done today are more refined, offering a better result with increased longevity.

“The need for mini-procedures stemmed from the needs of the modern lifestyle of today’s patient,” says Asheville, NC, facial plastic surgeon David Harley, MD. “Patients are now taking an earlier approach to correcting the signs of aging. They want a quicker recovery than what’s experienced with the more traditional surgeries offered.” Mini-procedures have become as mainstream as Botox, Dysport and even fillers. “Patients demand faster recoveries and smaller incisions,” says Beverly Hills, CA, plastic surgeon Garo Kassabian, MD

While there is a time and place for mini-procedures, realistic expectations are important. Discuss with your board-certified doctor what you can expect. Remember that while recovery is often quicker, it is individual. These procedures are modified versions (yet are still surgeries) and they may not necessarily bring about the same outcome as a more extensive or invasive option, according to Dr. Singer.
