All that yoga could be helping more than just your derriere. A new study out of Yale, and about to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has tied meditation with increased happiness and other healthful benefits.
“Meditation has been shown to help in a variety of health problems, such as helping people quit smoking, cope with cancer, and even prevent psoriasis,” says Judson A. Brewer, M.D., Ph.D., the lead author of the study.
Researchers studying brain imaging found that meditators have decreased activity in areas of the brain, which affect anxiety and mental illness. This is good news as a growing number of dermatologists have come forward acknowledging patients’ stress or depression is capable of upsetting their skin-causing inflammation like acne and psoriasis.
So if you suffer from psoriasis, get your “Om” on and also consider one or more of these treatments:
– Creams, ointments, lotions or bath treatments containing salicylic acid
– Laser light therapy
– Prescription medications
