For ladies who like to go bare, this season is for you. For one, the nude makeup trend is here to stay, which is good news for those interested in a more youthful look and those who beckon their natural beauty to shine through. Secondly, as winter gets closer, the less face makeup you wear, the happier your skin will be.
Makeup expert Gail Sagel offers some of her helpful tips on how to get the most out of this minimalist trend.
First, a bit about winter skin care. During colder months we tend to think less about protecting our skin. If you’re exposing your body to the warm sun, then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about, right? So wrong.
“Everyone forgets that the key to a beautiful, well-put-together makeup look is maintaining the health of your skin, first and foremost,” says Sagel. “In the winter, I suggest copious moisturizing, drinking lots of water and using sunscreen no matter how chilly it may be outside.”
Now for makeup, apply naturally: “The key [for this look] is to create the illusion that makeup wasn’t needed at all to achieve the desired effect. Make sure to avoid the common pitfalls of foundations and powders, like caking and oil, because the look should be fresh and dewy, not stiff and full of product.”
Skip the powder: If just a tinted moisturizer does the trick–that’s all the makeup you need. If you need more coverage, Sagel suggests reaching for a liquid foundation and applying it with a makeup sponge in quick, short strokes, being careful to blend. But here’s the catch–don’t set it with powder. If your skin tends to get oily, use makeup blotting papers to remove excess oil in trouble spots. Then, keeping with the powder-free idea, reach for a cream blush to get that “just flushed” look, nothing over the top, she says.
Love your lashes and lips: For the natural eye look, only use mascara. Stick with a reliable product, and make sure to rid lashes of clumps since they are the star of the show (we love Mally Volumizing Mascara ($20). Add light eyeliner if desired.
Keep the lips subtle. Stick with a color that is close to that of the actual lip, without being too glossy. Try Fresh Sugar Passion Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 ($22.50).
