Did you know that 96 percent of adults believe an attractive smile makes you more appealing to the opposite sex? “One of the first things people notice when they look at you is your smile—it’s shape and whether it’s straight or crooked,” says New York cosmetic dentist Timothy Chase, DMD. And it takes them a split second to decide if they like what they see. Want to upgrade your smile? It won’t take long…

In minutes: Whitening your teeth can provide immediate results. Over the-counter whiteners are gentle enough to use at home and with continued use can leave your teeth with fewer surface stains. If the results aren’t as bright as you would like, professional-strength bleaching trays can be prescribed by your dentist and custom-made for your teeth. Laser or light-based bleaching is the in-office option and while results can last from six months to two year, it only takes 30 to 60 minutes—however, this method is not recommended for those with sensitive teeth.

In an hour: In only one visit to your dentist, you can spot treat chipped, broken, crooked and discolored teeth with bonding. Your cosmetic dentist will apply a tooth-colored resin to teeth and harden it with a special high-intensity light. But bonding can chip so make sure to avoiding using your teeth for anything other than eating.

In a few weeks: The age-reversing power of veneers can drastically transform your smile. Veneers can address specific concerns from spacing issues to eliminating chips and discoloration. Your dentist will etch your teeth with a mild acid solution and then bond the veneers to your teeth with a composite resin material that is hardened by a high-intensity light. With veneers you still need to floss and schedule cleanings regularly.

In a few months: Thanks to the teeth-straightening and bite-correcting powers of orthodontics, it’s never too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted. Traditional braces are the best option for bringing teeth up or down from the gum since Invisalign can only move teeth horizontally, not vertically. Although Invisalign can’t help with bite problems, it works wonders for minor crowding. Straightening your teeth through fixed appliances, like braces or retainers can take years but the results are natural and beautiful.
