Wearing your hair parted in the middle is a signature look for many celebrities and supermodels, but it doesn’t work for everyone. However, according to Pinterest research, a new part, the low side part, is topping the trend charts and searches for the style have increased more than 88 percent since last year. Here’s the scoop on the look and why you’re going to be seeing more of it on red carpets, runways and everywhere in between.
Arsen Gurgov, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Arsen Gurgov Salon in New York, says side parts have always been one of the most flattering styles because of its ability to soften any look and draw the eye away from asymmetrical facial features. “I think the side part is gaining popularity right now because it’s a simple, easy change that anyone can make to modernize their style without the commitment of a new cut or color. Plus, side parts are the only kind of part that go with any face shape. They are very versatile and transformative.”
To make a “low” (or deep) side part, find where your hair normally parts (on either side) and then move it an extra inch or two toward your ear. Whereas a standard side part usually falls in the middle of your eyebrow, a low side part falls more in line with the the tail of your eyebrow. “For inspiration, look to A-listers like Bebe Rexha and Hailee Steinfeld, both of whom just rocked this look at the Grammys this year,” Gurgov suggests.
Two expert tips to keep in mind when creating a low side part: “First, the deeper the side part, the more it accentuates the eyes,” says Gurgov. “And second, if you want a sexy, voluminous look, simply part your hair in the opposite direction you normally would to create volume at the roots for maximum oomph.”
