Green hair is taking on a whole new definition with the launch of L’Oréal’s first ever Green Academy, located at the company headquarters in Madrid. In an effort to educate hair stylists about environmental issues associated with their profession, L’Oréal opened the Green Academy, where it is expected that 8,000 stylists will be educated each year.
The Green Academy focuses particularly on recycling, boasting a glass-paneled recycling wall for disposing of all product packaging used on a daily basis. Reduced water consumption also plays a paramount role in the new facility. Water is recycled through an exhibit displayed in a public area, and the flow rates on the nozzles used for shampooing have been significantly reduced. Air temperature is controlled through a single system that combines heating, cooling and hot water in one unit. L’Oréal is also working on developing other energy-saving technologies for the hair industry.
The sustainable facility is green in construction as well. The building is comprised of FSC-certified wood, 100 percent recyclable steel, recycled aluminum and other eco-friendly materials. It features flooring and furniture fabricated from recycled plastic and olive pits, and walls covered in recycled wallpaper.
