New research presented at the 2011 Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting and Food Expo reveals that snacking outside of a regular meal is increasing among Americans. Actually, snacking-and beverage consumption in particular, account for more than 25 percent of Americans’ calorie intake each day.

Overall, the act of snacking has increased in the U.S. recently, but there has been a major increase in calories consumed by drinking. Today, beverages account for half of the calories consumed when snacking. Many people don’t regard beverages as snacks and sometimes ignore the calories they are consuming while drinking a beverage.

Are any of your favorite snacks drinkable? Do you consider a juice or soda to be a snack?
