It was hard to miss all the thick, luscious lips on the red carpet during the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. Actresses Emma Stone, Amber Heard and Natalie Portman puckered up with berry-infused color that really made their full lips stand out. Want to get the look yourself? Here’s how:
Lip plumpers: These over-the-counter products rely on ingredients like cinnamon, menthol and camphor to safely “irritate” the lips and temporarily plump them. Other lip-boosting ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, will add intense moisture to add volume, while retinol and alphahydroxy acids will help stimulate collagen and create fuller lips over time. Try Booty Parlor Kissaholic Aphrodisiac Plumping Lip Gloss ($16) in Tremble for a touch of berry color, plus ginger root oil and chili fruit extract for plumping action.
Fillers: Augmenting the natural shape of your lips with an injectable filler like hyaluronic acid (such as the newly FDA-approved for lips, Restylane) will help add volume and define the curves of your lips. If shape is not taken into consideration, you could end up with overly round, sausage-like lips, so be sure to consult with an experienced, board-certified physician. Fat grafting may be a longer-term option, but some doctors feel the results are unpredictable and adding fat into the lips may cause lumpiness, but your doctor can direct you to the right procedure for your individual concerns.
Stop lip lines: With age and sun damage, you may notice small, vertical lines forming above your upper lip. Always protect your lips from the sun with sunscreen to prevent the lines from forming and consider either injectable fillers to fill in the lines or tiny amounts of an injectable such as Botox or Dysport to limit the muscle action that can lead to lines.
