The first step in regular liposuction is infusing the area to be treated with a solution that makes fat cells easier to remove. On the other hand, SmartLipo (also called laser-assisted liposuction) uses a fiber with a laser on the end that destroys the fat cells it comes in contact with in order to facilitate removal.
Many doctors find SmartLipo to be ideal for areas with less fat, such as the back of the arms. One advantage may be less bleeding, because the laser coagulates tissue as it destroys fat.
A handful of studies have compared the two modalities, and SmartLipo doesn’t appear to provide an advantage over traditional liposuction. However, some doctors believe laser-assisted liposuction may offer a skin-tightening effect.
