Laverne Cox is getting ready for Sunday night’s Emmy broadcast—for which she is nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series for her groundbreaking role as Sophia Burset in Orange Is The New Black—by doing something many of us have been doing for months: “I’m trying to get a lot of sleep,” she says.

We caught up with the star during a Zoom call to promote her partnership with Gold Bond and the #ChampionYourSkin campaign, which celebrates those who put their skin to the test to make the world a better place. And while awards weekend is usually a time for the glitz and glamour on the red carpet, this nominee is instead using her platform to shine the spotlight on those who are breaking boundaries while feeling confident in their skin.

“This campaign is really about everyone who’s out there, putting their skin to the test every single day to make the world a better place,” she explains. “This year, particularly, I know a lot of us have been asking ourselves: ‘What more can I do to give back? What more can I do to make things better for so many people who are struggling?’ Simply by asking those questions and by doing the work to make the world a better place, so many of us are skin champions.”

On the call, Laverne and Gold Bond celebrated other skin champions by spotlighting the fist-of-its-kind Trans Wellness Center in Los Angeles, which supports the transgender and non-binary community by providing comprehensive resources and services. Speaking with program director Mariana Marroquin, Laverne highlighted the important aid the TWC offers to the transgender community. During difficult times like transitioning, the center is there in many capacities, for example helping with legal name changes, which Laverne says is so important for the trans community, especially now during an election year when proper documentation is important.

In NewBeauty fashion, we also had to ask the star, how does an Emmy nominee get ready before a socially distant awards show and what has she done to stay balanced during this unpredictable year?

“For award show prep, I am—well I’m wearing Gold Bond to the awards darling of course—and I’m trying to get a lot of sleep. I have really busy, long, days coming up so I’m really just trying to get a lot of sleep, and enough sleep so that I can show up and do everything I have to do,” she says.

“And, this year, oh my god, I started off at the beginning of being quarantined and really saying OK, this is an opportunity to—after you know like two weeks of like a lot of sleep—this is an opportunity for me to really work on my psychological and emotional wellbeing. I thought, how do I come out of this more emotionally enlightened and spiritually grounded? And, so I’ve been doing a lot of specific work around that. I’m meditating more. I’ve really delved deep into this guy named Dr. Joe Dispenza and his work. He does a lot of work around sort of creating the future you want and manifesting that. Through meditation and other tools, leaning into therapy—I have been able to go to therapy every single week during quarantine via video chat. So, I have taken this as an opportunity to really do a lot of personal work and development on myself, and that’s practice work. That’s the work that we do.”

As for the future, Laverne says being single during this time has helped her give herself the self-love she’s needed to stay healthy, centered and balanced: “You know I was talking about self-love earlier and that it’s about how you treat yourself. It is about what I do every single day to remind me and my nervous system that I’m worthy of love. I love that I’m single during quarantine and I’ve been thinking a lot about romantic love not being in my life, but luckily, I’ve known that romantic love in the past and that still exist in my body. I can bring those sensations up any time I want and fill myself up with love.”

“The realization that I’ve had during this quarantine moment has just been so lifesaving. The love that I want is already here, it really is. You know we need other people, but girl I can do it all by myself,” she adds.
