Even though the FDA recently compelled LASIK advertisers to start clearly stating the vision-correcting procedure’s risks-the result of public meeting with a few dozen unhappy patients-a comprehensive, peer-reviewed report shows the vast majority of LASIK patients are satisfied with their outcomes.
Improved and enhanced over the course of almost 15 years, LASIK surgery has been performed more than 16 million times around the world, with about one million procedures performed in the U.S. every year. Researchers surveyed about 2,000 of these patients, learning that there is a 95% satisfaction rate.
“This places LASIK among the most successful of all elective surgeries, comparing very favorably with other elective procedures,” said lead researcher Kerry D. Solomon, MD, based in South Carolina.
Solomon and his fellow researchers came to their conclusion by reviewing 19 different international and domestic studies that covered quality of life and patient satisfaction. He went on to say, “Because this review process was systematic, transparent, and based on carefully vetted international and U.S. research, the findings are highly reliable.”
