A new type of laser treatment may banish that late-night bad decision you had inked onto your forearm. What might have seemed like a good idea at the time can be removed in less than half the time, thanks to new laser technology known as the R20 method.
Previous versions of laser tattoo removal required one pass of that laser over the offending marking, which was revisited with another laser treatment six weeks later, once the skin had healed. With R20, a pulsing laser beam passes over the skin four times with just a 20 minute break between treatments.
In a report published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the R20 method wiped out the entire tattoo in 61 percent of the areas treated, and removed 70 percent more ink than the traditional laser treatment.
However, the researchers said, while R20 removes more ink, it caused more initial damage-although not more scarring than the typical tattoo laser removal procedure.
Do you have any ink you’d like removed? If so, the procedure averages about $600-likely far more than you paid for that tattoo in the first place.
