It’s been over a century since the first facelift was performed, but the stigma associated with physical alterations and augmentations still exists. And while Botox Cosmetic, fillers and laser treatments have certainly become more mainstream, people are still remaining relatively tight-lipped about their plastic surgeries—especially if they consider the procedure a bit more “private” than others.
However, a once taboo procedure has recently spiked in popularity, proving that people are more interested than ever in improving the appearance of more than just their faces. According to the 2016 Stats Report conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), female-centric procedures are on the rise, specifically, labiaplasty. Labiaplasty, which was once an uncommon and relatively niche procedure performed to reshape the appearance of the labia, rose 23.2 percent over the past year.
Additionally, 36 percent of all U.S.–based plastic surgeons are now performing labiaplasties in their offices, which clocks in as more than double the number of people performing the procedure five years prior. Interestingly enough, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) also reported a boost among labiaplasties, further proving how popular the procedure has become.

While some people may assume these increased rates are rooted in either a lack of self-confidence or the desire to please their partner, doctors are finding that it’s typically a choice made on the patient’s own accord, for no other reason than they like how it looks. “Women are requesting everything from breast lifts and fat grafting to the breast and newer procedures like labiaplasty, simply because they like a certain aesthetic,” explains Daniel C. Mills, president of ASAPS. “It’s encouraging to meet patients with individual tastes and desires.”
