The Gold Standard of Skin Care Just Launched a Makeup Line featured image

You’ve seen its jars on the vanities of the biggest celebrities, heard makeup artists and skin care experts sing the brand’s praises and read many a beauty editor’s love affair with the coveted Crème de La Mer, but until now, one thing has been missing from skin care brand La Mer’s collection—makeup. But as of this month, we can now get the brand’s famous Miracle Broth in makeup form. Meet Skincolor de La Mer, the brand’s first full range of color cosmetics, which is described as a “transformative bridge between skin care and color.”

The line is refined yet luxurious (as we’ve come to expect from the brand), including The Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation ($110), a hydrating yet lightweight SPF 20 foundation that’s available in an impressive 15 shades; The Concealer ($75), a protective, antioxidant-boosting option available in a range of four hues; and The Powder ($95), designed to be worn as a finishing powder to blur away any last imperfections for a radiant finish. Also available are The Foundation Brush ($70) and The Powder Brush ($80), both specifically designed for use with these new formulas, either wet or dry.

The Foundation, Concealer and Powder all include the brand’s coveted Miracle Broth (it’s present in every La Mer skin care product) and are formulated with a cocktail of renewing ingredients (think algae and marine peptides) to replenish and repair skin, merging caring for your skin and enhancing your features easier than ever. And while the makeup seems to come close to replacing your skin care (it has so many impressive ingredients!), global brand president of La Mer, Sandra Main, explains to WWD that though these products are undoubtedly multitaskers, they should not substitute your regular routine. “Consumers are so sophisticated that they do expect multiple benefits in a product. It’s no longer, ‘This product will do one thing’—it has to serve you in multiple ways before it’s worthwhile.” She adds that although the brand plans to aggressively promote the range, it will never—and should never—replace skin care.

But, that’s not to say that these products don’t improve your skin at all. In true La Mer fashion, the products are designed to better your skin while you wear them. According to the brand, the line works like a skin care product in that when you take it off at night, the ingredients are still working to improve your skin. Translation: The more you use these products, the better results you’ll see—as if we needed another reason to empty our wallets.
