In a recent interview with Complex magazine, Kylie Jenner gets candid about her lip fillers—it’s kind of crazy to think about how much her lips have been in the news in the last couple years. Doctors have even seen spikes in their requests for lip injections since Jenner finally copped to having them “done.”
The 19-year-old reality TV star (she’s on the cover of Complex‘s Oct/Nov issue), opens up about what fueled her decision to get the injections. “My lips have been an insecurity of mine all my life.” She tells a story about kissing a guy in middle school who said to her, “Your lips are really small but you’re a really good kisser. I didn’t think you were gonna be good at kissing.” Jenner comments: “It was so rude. From then on, I just felt like I saw guys staring at my lips. I felt like no one wanted to kiss me.”

Getting your lips injected to give them a natural-looking volume boost is perfectly acceptable, but many critics targeted Jenner because she wouldn’t admit to having them done. This spiraled into girls doing the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge in order to look like her, which experts said was not safe. In the interview, Jenner says she lied because she didn’t want to look bad to her young fans. “I wasn’t even 17 yet,” she said. “What if I came out and said, ‘Oh, yeah, I got my lips done’? What are all those moms going to think about me? These kids, my fans, they’re going to think I’m crazy. I didn’t want to be a bad influence. I didn’t want people to think you had to get your lips done to feel good about yourself. But they thought it was crazier that I was lying about it because it was so obvious. I wish I had just been honest and upfront.”
Another topic that just about every news story touched on was the size of her lips. Why did she go so big? Jenner admits she went overboard. “When you first get them done, you’re like, ‘Oh, it could be a little bit bigger on that side.’ I’d go back and be like, ‘They went down’ and think they could be bigger. But I went too far. It was very painful.”

We feel good about Jenner’s decision to speak out and hope that more celebrities have the confidence to reveal the procedures they’ve had so that the average woman can know what it really takes to look the way that many Hollywood insiders do.
