Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber have many awe-inspiring features, but perhaps the most enviable is their luminous skin. It’s no surprise that the two best friends share a makeup artist as their complexions often have a similar glow to them. Mary Phillips, the woman behind it all, shared some of her top tips on how to create flawless skin, and one of the most important steps in her routine is primer.
“Primer helps enhance the look of the makeup you apply, and ensures it lasts all day,” Phillips tells British Vogue. “I love an overall flawless, smooth complexion and to achieve that, start with base products: primer, foundation and concealer. A primer that can ensure this smooth base [and] has staying power is key and it’s quick and easy to apply.”
Phillips has one primer she tends to turn to. “I’ve been using Hourglass’s new Vanish Airbrush Primer and it works wonders,” reveals Phillips. “It’s a translucent gel that helps to absorb oil, blur imperfections, minimize the look of pores, and smooth fine lines. It’s multipurpose—it doesn’t just ensure makeup lasts, but it also helps to create a seamless finish.”
When discussing the necessity of having a good foundation for makeup, primer is helpful, but it would be remiss to not note the role that good skin care plays. “It starts with healthy, hydrated skin. Following a skin-care regimen and doing routine skin maintenance is always beneficial—knowing what works best for your skin and using the right products and tools for application is also key,” says Phillips.
