I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve played Kacey Musgraves‘ “Slow Burn” on repeat—well, the whole Golden Hour album actually—with a candle burning somewhere in the apartment, and thought, this song would be the perfect name for a candle. Funny enough, it turns out Kacey was on the same page because after discovering Boy Smells candles in a boutique near her house in Nashville, she says she “slid into” cofounder Matthew Herman’s DMs, and a shortly after, a collab was born.

Known for its millennial-pink packaging and cool, genderless vibe, Boy Smells was the perfect partnership for Musgraves, whose country-bohemian style fits the brand’s bill. The scent—an earthy, intoxicating combination of incense, black pepper, raspberry, tonka, amber and smoked papyrus whipped up by genius perfumer Jerome Epinette—smells warm, but unfamiliar. It has a sexiness to it too that reminds me of being cozied up late-night in the back booth at your favorite bar with your favorite person.

“This is really fun for me because I’ve never done anything like this before,” Musgraves said last night at a party in New York City celebrating the launch of the candle. “This is taking the emotion from where I was mentally when I wrote this song into life in the form of a scent. I was sitting on my front porch in Nashville in the mid-summer a couple years ago and I remember the faint smell of a fire burning somewhere in the distance, kind of drifting by, and getting two seconds to just take a beat, and take a breath, and find a moment of Zen within the chaos of the last couple crazy years. I got to go back there in my mind and be highly collaborative with a brand I love so much. I discovered them in a little store around the corner from my house in Nashville, and I just became a big fan and slid into their DMs one day and said ‘Hey, we should collab, this would be really fun,’ and they were down.”

I’m not surprised the candle ($39) sold out within hours of its debut—I couldn’t dream of a more perfect pairing! The brand has yet to announce a restock, but check boysmells.com for updates.
