Celebrity hairstylist David Gardner was on set with us for the latest NewBeauty cover shoot starring actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus. For the look, Gardner wanted to stay on-trend. “The look now is thick, healthy hair, but we’re going back to a more simple kind of volume—a little less width, a little less backcombing— more of how hair dries naturally. I call it ‘model-off-duty’ hair and that’s always the look that I strive for,” he says.

“Julia’s got beautiful thick, wavy, brown hair. Everybody knows it as being super curly from Seinfeld and other movies that she’s done. Like most ladies as we get older, hair texture changes, skin texture changes and our hairs fall into a heavy, beautiful bohemian wave. So we’re going to work with that and just polish it off a little.”

“For the look, I applied a little volumizing spray. Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray ($29) has been my favorite for twenty-five years. If your hair is super clean and difficult to work with sometimes, it’s a very light spray, so it adds just a little bit of grit and dirt for added texture,” he says.

“I just it spray through damp hair, loosely blow dry it kind of straight using a big round brush—just so there’s a bend on the end but no curls. From there you can start going through with a one-inch curling iron and start adding bends at the mid length of the hair for that kind of Kate Moss, natural look,” says Gardner.

“Then I like to finish with the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($42) because it’s very dry and gives that second-day hair look. Finally, I added in some hairspray and that’s it,” says Gardner.
