Victoria’s Secret models are known for their toned, muscular bodies, but it’s not only genetics they have to thank for that, a strict diet and a vigorous exercise regimen are vital for their physique as well. But contrary to popular belief, those slender and ultra-toned figures aren’t achieved using the one diet most of us assume models love—the juice cleanse.

In case you’re unfamiliar with juice cleanses, they’re essentially a diet where the participant only consumes liquids that are made from fruits and vegetables for a short period of time. The diet promises detoxification and a jumpstart to weight loss, but that’s not always the case. According to Victoria’s Secret personal trainer, Justin Gelband (who works with models like Miranda Kerr and Karlie Kloss), this diet is one of the worst things you can do if you’re looking to shed some pounds. In fact, Gelband claims that some of his model clients had tried a juice cleanse and ended up gaining weight instead.

“At Fashion Week, some models went on a juice diet and didn’t tell me,” Gelband told Business Insider. “Not one lost weight, some actually gained weight. That got me in big trouble.”

While it might seem surprising that a diet consisting of only liquids could cause weight gain, it actually makes a lot of sense. Celebrity nutritionist, Kelly LeVeque, explained why in a recent interview with Byrdie: “When you’re juicing, you’re loading your body with sugar—primarily fructose (i.e. sugar). Fructose turns to fat faster than any other form of carbohydrate.”

The takeaway? Skip the juice cleanse altogether and choose a diet that focuses on foods that are known to be healthy (think leafy greens and lean proteins). You’ll see much better results in the long term, and as a bonus, you’ll even avoid the crankiness that usually accompanies juicing.
