Although there are far fewer overweight people in Japan than there are in America, shapewear is becoming hugely popular there-with men.

The Associate Press recently reported that garments like slimming boxer-briefs and t-shirts with tummy panels have shot up in popularity amongst Japanese men of all ages. “Young men are wearing tighter trousers now and like women, they want a cleaner line,” said Asako Iwahashi, a spokeswoman for Triumph International Japan, an underwear company that introduced men’s girdles in 2006. “We made our men’s brand aimed at those in their 30s and 40s, but it has been selling well among younger guys, too.”

Many bulging bellies in Japan are not a result of overeating, as in America, but of metabolic syndrome. Regardless of the reasons, however, the desire for a fitter-looking figure is proving to be a strong one in an unexpected demographic.
