When you think of coconut oil, it’s safe to assume the tasks of removing makeup, brushing teeth, moisturizing, and even cooking, might come to mind, but an arena of beauty and wellness that the do-it-all oil hasn’t touched—until now—is that of self-tanning. But come May, everything you thought you knew about streaky, smelly and orange self-tanning formulas is about to change with the introduction of the James Read Coconut Melting Tanning Balm ($35), a formula that marries the benefits of 100-percent organic coconut oil and a gorgeous, straight-from-the-island glow the masterminds behind the brand are known for delivering via out-of-the-box formulas.
Fans of the chic gold-and-white line know that the unconventional formulas aren’t just all talk—these range anywhere from sleeping masks to water mists—but they seriously deliver, too. Designed to deliver a gradual tan while delivering a no-joke surge of moisture to thirsty skin thanks to organic coconut oil, the newest addition to the lineup doesn’t disappoint, either, and checks all of my self-tanner “musts”: the formula doesn’t wreak of DHA, my skin doesn’t feel the least bit dry after I’m done applying it and each time I use it, I wake up with the most natural-looking, golden tan I almost can’t believe came from a jar.

To use it, apply the balm straight to your skin (be sure to use the latex gloves provided as the formula likes to linger a bit longer on your hands) starting with your ankles and working your way up. The balm, just like your go-to jar of coconut oil, will melt as it comes into contact with your skin, making for the world’s easiest application (it’s close to impossible to miss a spot because of how easy it is to blend on the body) and a super hydrating treatment in all in one. Once you’re done, your skin will look and feel a bit greasy because of the oil you just slathered all over it—this isn’t an apply-and-leave-the-house kind of formula—but it should be absorbed in about an hour (if not, I haven’t had any streaking occur since putting on loose-fitting clothing 30 minutes after every application). The tan will develop over six to eight hours—sleep on it and come morning, your skin will be as soft and hydrated as ever and you’ll sport a glow you thought only came from spending a week in Bora Bora. As for me, I’ll be daydreaming of such a trip and buying this stuff by the case the minute it hits QVC in May.
