Getting your foundation to look completely even and smooth can be a challenge. After all, your fingers, beautyblenders and brushes have edges that can end up showing up in the final product. As per usual, a creator on TikTok has developed a clever hack to help you apply your foundation evenly and without getting your hands dirty.

TikToker Avonna Sunshine first introduced the concept of using your jade roller to apply foundation on November 3. In just a couple of weeks, the trend has caught on, with other beauty creators joining in.

In her video, Avonna Sunshine demonstrates blending her foundation onto her face with a jade roller. As she rolls the foundation across her skin, she explains its benefits. “Not only does it evenly distribute your foundation, but the coolness of it helps to shrink your pores, so it’s going to give a very, very smooth application and you’re going to get fuller coverage this way,” she says.

She goes on to explain that not only will your coverage be more even, but you also won’t go through your foundation as fast. “You have to think when you’re using a sponge or a brush, it’s soaking up some of the product, but with the quartz roller, it’s just evenly distributing that product that way you’re going to use less product,” she explained.

However, not everyone was as convinced of this method’s benefits. Ling Tang gave the technique a try and found that although it felt “nice and cool” during application, it was “hard to blend, especially around the nose” and made her foundation “dry and cakey.”

A common complaint with the method is that it takes more time and effort than regular foundation application. Sara Palmyra’s foundation wouldn’t budge for a bit, and Amanda Frisch advised against testing this hack when you’re in a rush.

On the other hand, Rachel Rigler went in with low expectations, but after trying it, she wrote that she will “be doing this every day.” With all the mixed reviews, it’s something you should test out yourself to see if it works for your skin type.
