The purported link between diet and acne is nothing new. And with all the foods we’ve heard that could possibly trigger adult acne breakouts, chocolate seems to be one that consistently makes the list.
A small study recently published in the journal Cytokine found that consuming chocolate could increase the inflammation that causes acne.
For now, there’s still no verdict on if in fact chocolate causes acne. More research is necessary to further examine what exactly in the candy could be causing breakouts. For instance, the researchers suggested fat-free chocolate might have a different effect on the skin.
While many speculate the connection between foods (like dairy, carbohydrates, chocolate and crustaceans) and breakouts, there’s not nearly as much conclusive data as there is speculation. Your best plan of attack for great skin should include a healthy, balanced diet in addition to visiting a board-certified dermatologist to find the best acne treatments for you.
