The eyes are one of the first areas of the face that show their age due to thin skin and accumulated fatty deposits. As fat is lost or becomes displaced, dark circles, hollows and bags become more evident. A fairly quick procedure, a mini-eyelid lift, sometimes called a pinch lift or skin pinch blepharoplasty, can make a big difference to the aging eyes. “All plastic surgeons have their own technique for operating on the eyes—some take out fat, others remove muscle, some do both—but when just skin is the issue, a pinch lift gives a nice effect,” says says Dallas facial plastic surgeon Jesse E. Smith, MD.
Why go for the mini surgery opposed to a regular eyelift? There’s often less bruising post-procedure because the muscles in the lower eyelid are not touched. However, bags and hollows won’t be improved since the fat and muscle is not transposed or eliminated and only extra skin is removed. It’s important to know that there’s no guarantee that the procedure won’t have to be performed again in the future. And in some, the procedure can alter the shape of the eyes, making them look too round.
Some doctors choose to treat patients with a course of pre-operative (as well as following surgery) recovery boosters like bromelain and arnica to speed up the healing process.
Fractional lasers can be used to resurface the skin around the eyes, eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. An effective mode for erasing fine lines and wrinkles, La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD says that they can’t correct volume loss, deep hollows or bags. “For those problems, only filler, fat or surgery will do.”
