To relieve red, blotchy skin, your doctor may suggest a series of intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments, also known as photorejuvenation. Performed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon with a handheld device, IPL applies a broad spectrum of light that penetrates and repairs the deepest layers of skin tissue to treat redness, broken capillaries, and excess pigment.
Because IPL doesn’t wound tissue, recovery time is minimal. You may experience additional redness for a few hours following treatment, up to as much as five days. Although it’s possible to see improvement after one session, four to six treatments are recommended for the best results; and sunscreen is essential for maintenance.
The best candidate for IPL is a lighter-skinned individual with a lot of broken capillaries. In darker skin, using lower energies can prevent risks like hypo- or hyperpigmentation.
