Depending on your surgeon and your body, you may be offered several incision options when undergoing breast augmentation.
A periareolar incision is made around the areola, the pigmented area around the nipple. This incision typically heals well and may be nearly undetectable, although it may not be appropriate for women with extremely small areolae.
An axillary incision is made in the armpit. This may yield a less apparent scar; however, Christina Aguilera is believed to have gotten breast implants with this incision due to a sometimes-visible scar in her armpit.
Axillary implant placement requires the help of an endoscope due to limited visibility, and some surgeons may find it more difficult to achieve symmetry with this technique. This incision can only be used with saline implants that must be filled after placement.
An inframammary incision is made in the under-breast crease, and is the most popular method because symmetry is most reliable this way. Although some surgeons prefer this incision for precision purposes, the scar may be somewhat more visible.
