By now, your hair care routine is probably a little on autopilot. Shampoo, rinse, conditioner, rinse, towel, brush, apply styling products, dry.

Pretty simple stuff—except if you start to consider this one tiny move that might be standing in the way of your styling products working. As in AT ALL.

It’s called emulsifying, and it’s the step that you probably always see stylists at the salon do when they take whatever styling product they’re going to apply on your hair and sort of “warm” it up by rubbing it in between their hands first.

“Doing this heats the product to help break it down and create a thin layer,” Moroccanoil global ambassador Kevin Hughes explains. “This allows for better distribution of the product and prevents you from adding too much in one area.” Better distribution equals less product in one spot, which helps to combat against weighing down hair and making it feel greasy.

If you are already pretty versed in this routine, Hughes says step it up a notch by “cocktailing” your hair products. “Products work better when they are mixed and matched. The key is to start with a little less and build up. You can always add more, but you can’t take it away once it is applied to the hair.”

And for achieving that always in-demand perfect blowout at home? “I recommend using Moroccanoil Treatment as the foundation for all styling, followed by Moroccanoil Smoothing Lotion to create lightweight hold and definition and Moroccanoil Blow-dry Concentrate to decrease your drying time and create shine. Apply a pea-size amount for short hair and a dime-size for longer hair,” Hughes says. “The beauty of the Treatment is that you can it layer with our styling products or custom blend them together; it helps spread the product throughout the hair because of its silky glide.”
