Having worked on thousands of faces—many of them celebrities—makeup artists know everything there is to know about the world of beauty, including the products that work and the ones that don’t quite match up. Here, we’ve asked some of the country’s top makeup artists which product they could never live without. Their answers may surprise you.

Her Pick:Crest 3D Whitestrips ($65). I’m a huge fan of a bold pop of color on the lips, especially orangey red tones that can really brighten up your look even if you have no other makeup on! The bad news, though, is that bold colors (especially these tones) can really highlights any yellow on your teeth, so keeping these strips as part of my beauty arsenal is key! Using a strip a day for 2 weeks really does make my pearly whites brighter and whiter while perfectly complementing my signature lip.”

Her Pick: “For a long-lasting blowout, I love using heat-activated setting lotions. My favorite is Unite Blow&Set ($25). It gives me a great hold, and long-lasting style. When I touch up my hair a couple of days later, I use hot tools to re-activate the lotion.

His Pick: “As a celebrity makeup artist I could never be without a facial cleaning brush. I always tell my clients to use a facial cleansing brush 2-3 times per week, like a Clarisonic ($149), to exfoliate their skin to keep it healthier.  That way it allows makeup to stay on longer and go on smoother.”

Her Pick:The one product that will be in my kit forever is Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder ($25). This is a light, weightless powder for setting product under the eyes. It lightens and brightens any darkness under the eyes instantly and does not settles in fine lines.”

Her Pick: Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate ($80). This product is so versatile. It can warm up the skin, contour and highlight to make the skin look radiant. When I have five minutes to do a client’s makeup, I use this product with my fingers. I even apply it on the eyes. It works with most skin tones, and comes in two shades.”

Her Pick: “My one must have is HOMEOPLASMINE ointment ($19). Dehydrated lips is my pet peeve, and this ointment is the best for healing the lips or any dry patches.”
