Hypnosis is not just a sideshow spectacle with waving watches and humiliated participants acting like chickens. Used in a medical setting, this legitimate psychological therapy is proving to be helpful to women undergoing surgery for breast cancer.
A Mount Sinai Medical Center team in New York City found that a 15-minute hypnosis session before breast surgery led to less pain, fatigue and nausea post-op than women who had a non-hypnotic conversation with a therapist.
Researchers believe that those who were hypnotized were significantly more relaxed going into their operations, which then had a measurable impact on recovery.
Interestingly, hypnosis also seems to lower the cost of surgery by almost $800 due to a reduction in post-op needs.
