Minor makeup mistakes can ruin the beauty look you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Romy Soleimani, celebrity makeup artist and beauty director at large for Beauty.com, shares four of the most common ways you’re using your makeup wrong, plus her tips for how to fix them, so you can maximize your products, and your routine.

Pumping Your Mascara
“Pumping your mascara wand to get more product onto the brush can add air to the mascara, which dries it out more quickly,” says Soleimani. “Instead, twirl the wand inside the tube before bringing it out to apply.”

Overapplying Your Foundation
Soleimani says that most of us don’t need to apply foundation to cover every inch of our face, but rather just certain areas. “Begin application in the middle of your face—around the nose and mouth area—and work your way out,” she adds.

Coloring In Your Brows
Unfortunately, it’s almost too easy to make your brows look fake and drawn on, especially if you’re heavy-handed with your products. “To avoid this, make sure your brow pencil is very sharp, and then simply draw in additional hairs following the natural growth direction of your eyebrows,” says Soleimani.

Overdrawing Your Lips
A bold, faux lip line can be easily noticeable, and often unattractive. “After using lip liner, trace your lips using a Q-Tip to create a softer, more natural-looking edge,” says Soleimani.
