How old were you when you first became concerned with your body image? And did your concerns make you want to take surgical action? The desire for an ideal body shape begins with younger and younger people these days. But should cosmetic surgery for underage people be illegal?
Some areas of Australia think so. So far the state of Queensland is the only one that has banned unnecessary cosmetic surgery done purely for ego for those under 18 (passed in 2008). Not much later, New South Wales created a waiting period of three months for youngsters. Now there is talk of passing stricter regulations country wide to protect impressionable teenagers who may be rushing into decisions before having time to get used to their bodies’ natural developments. This is still a few years off, but the discussion is raising important questions about youth and cosmetic procedures.
Should there be an age restriction? Or should everything be evaluated on a case-by-case basis? Are we doing an okay job regulating ourselves? What do you think?
