How Would You Handle This Hairy Situation?

Even though I went to college in Tallahassee, I would wait until my breaks to get my hair cut by Paul, back in Boca Raton. He was the only one I’d let touch my then-short hair, and I’d take any suggestion he made, which always resulted in fabulousness. But right after college, I moved up to New York and lost touch with him and his magic scissors.

One of the first things I thought about when I moved back down to South Florida in 2006 was, I wonder if Paul’s still around. I had forgotten his last name at this point, which made searching for him virtually impossible. I actually found myself asking, “Hey, do you know of a hairstylist named Paul that kind of looks like a mix between Elvis and a biker?” You can imagine the blank stares I got.

I went through a few disappointing cuts until my now-long hair and I were given an appointment with Jennifer. Intimidatingly cute and edgy, she was supportive of my choice to get bangs and more layers, and to my delight, she made it happen beautifully. I was so relieved to finally find my new long-term hairstylist relationship.

As she worked on the final details of my style, she told me how the stylist she’d been dating should be showing up any minute. And then he did. It was Paul.

I’m surprised my hair didn’t run to him like a dog who hadn’t seen its master in years. I stayed calm and had the whole “Hey, you used to cut my hair” conversation. But as I paid and tipped Jennifer, I felt a terrible anxiety.

Jennifer did an awesome job with long hair and I totally trust her. But after so many years of searching, there’s Paul-my long-lost short-hair savior. Who would you make your next appointment with?

I’ve made a decision, but I’d love to know what choice you would’ve made. Is there a certain kind of stylist etiquette that would bind you to one or the other?

If you’d like to visit either Jennifer or Paul for your next cut, they recently opened a new salon in downtown Delray Beach, Florida: Strand. Give one of them a call at 561-865-7619.
