7 Ways to Wake Up Prettier

You’ve probably seen the saying “I woke up like this” on everything from T-shirts to coffee mugs (it even has it’s own hashtag on social media), but what can you actually do to wake up looking prettier than you did the day before? We rounded up seven tips to help you get started.

Try a Sleeping Mask

No, we’re not talking about the thing you pull over your eyes to get to sleep—this is an actual skin-care product and popular trend to come out of Asia in the last year. While you’re catching zzz’s, your skin is busy healing itself from the damage it incurred throughout the day. Sleeping masks can help transform your skin (research shows that skin cell regeneration peaks during the night), thanks to potent ingredients and a boost of hydration. “Apply a thin layer of product onto your skin (some women paint in on with a brush), and by morning, your’ll see a major difference in your skin,” says Alicia Yoon, cofounder of Peach and Lily, a website that sells Asian beauty products. “In addition to quenching dry skin, sleeping masks also help brighten dark spots, improve sun damage, reduce fine lines and increase firmness.”

Product Pick: Peter Thomas Roth Mega-Rich Anti-Aging Sleeping Mask uses almond oil and aloe vera to soothe dryness and correct damage while minimizing irritation (it’s especially good for sensitive skin). $68, peterthomasroth.com

Exfoliate Before Bed

Creams and serums can’t fully do their jobs if the surface of your skin is dirty. When pores are clean, however, they can dive right in, sending their active ingredients into your skin’s layers to work their magic. That’s where exfoliation comes in. It’s important to remember, too, that some exfoliating products are too harsh for everyday use—the directions on the label should guide you, but if not, definitely run it by your dermatologist.

Product Pick: Airelle Skincare Exfoliating Cleanser is formulated with bamboo microbeads that gently sweep away dull skin–inducing impurities without disrupting healthy oil production. And the bonus: A powerful antioxidant complex containing blueberry extract goes to work on visible signs of aging. $64, airelleskin.com

Switch to a Silk Pillowcase

Not only is this SpaSilk 100-percent natural charmeuse silk pillowcase super luxurious and comfortable, but the brand says it’s also recommended by dermatologists to help minimize facial wrinkles (and it comes in 16 different colors!). We also know that silk pillowcases can help reduce frizz and unnecessary kinks in your hair when you wake up—those two reasons alone are enough to give it a try. New York aesthetician Mandy Epley says that sleeping on your back at a slightly elevated position can help eliminate three key “not-so-pretty” looks when you wake up: one-sided wrinkled face; puffy eyes due to fluid that accumulated with lymph and blood flow movement; and “V” wrinkles that show up on your décolleté. $20, store.spasilk.com

Slather on Body Butter

Yes, your precious complexion is important, but so is the skin on your body. If your face looks flawless, but the rest of you looks dry and crepey, your true age may become more evident. Hydrated skin is synonymous with healthy skin, and a nourishing body butter (it doesn’t have to be superthick and rich to work well), can do wonders while you sleep. Some formulas even have firming benefits or specific ingredients that tackle other body concerns such as sun damage, dark spots and acne.

Product Pick: Whish Three Whishes Body Butter drenches your skin with moisture using organic aloe, raspberry butter and shea butter so you can wake up to soft, totally touchable skin. We love the topical-smelling coconut version, but it’s also available in five other scents. $24, whishbody.com

Apply a Hair Mask

Not all of us have time, even on the weekends, to let a hair mask sit on our head for 20-plus minutes and then get back into the shower to rinse it out. And on the flipside, if you use a leave-in, you probably didn’t apply it to your roots in fear of making your hair fall flat or look greasy. Therefore, an overnight hair mask might be the perfect happy medium—the proper amount of time for true deep conditioning to take place without the need to rush, and the ability to wash it all out in the morning and start fresh.

Product Pick: Sachajuan Overnight Hair Repair cares for your strands while you get some much-needed shut-eye. Its gel formula features a hefty dose of the brand’s Ocean Silk Technology, which strengthens hair and restores elasticity while boosting shine. You’ll wake up to luscious locks and everyone will want to know what you’re using. $60, barneys.com

Treat Your Feet

You don’t have to live in a “walking city” like New York to appreciate a little TLC for your feet. Regular pedicures might be your remedy, but why not implement an at-home regimen, too. Soft, smooth feet that are free of dryness and calluses will not only look better, but also make you feel better, especially when sandal season approaches. Applying a foot cream each night (or having someone do it for you, wink wink) can provide immediate and long-term benefits—some products even come with special socks that lock in moisture and keep the cream from making your sheets messy while you sleep.

Product Pick: bliss softening socks + foot patrol exfoliates with a combo of alphahydroxy and salicylic acids to remove any buildup of dead skin. The lining of the socks traps in moisture when activated by your body heat as you sleep. The bottom line: You get spa-like results in the comfort of your own home. $70, blissworld.com

Experiment With Eye Cream

In the event that your sleeping mask or night cream isn’t designed for use around your eyes (many of them aren’t recommended for use on delicate skin in that area and can be very drying), applying a good eye cream is essential for a more rested, youthful appearance. Epley says to look for products that contain key ingredients such as vitamin C ester and licorice root, which are great for minimizing that “I just woke up” look. A beauty tip to keep in mind: Store your eye cream in the fridge, which will make it feel cool when you dab it on at night before bed, adding additional help to reduce any puffiness come morning.

Product Pick: Scalisi Eye Cream absorbs quickly into skin and features ash bark tree extract, which works to reduce under-eye bags (one of the key complaints of those with early wake-up calls). Fine lines and crow’s-feet are also minimized with regular use—the brand claims you will see results in as little as eight weeks. $55, scalisiskincare.com
