If you have fine hair, the battle to find good hair products that don’t weigh your hair down is a real one. We chatted with Colleen Duffy, a stylist with Sally Hershberger Los Angeles, to find out the best ways to use hair products without losing volume.
First, what you do to your hair in the shower makes a big difference in how flat or full your hair will look. “When shampooing, only shampoo at your scalp. Your ends are already very fragile, and detergents will only wear them down more,” says Duffy. Also be sure to use a volumizing shampoo once a week. “This will help to clarify your hair of any product buildup and add body,” she says. A lot of women apply conditioner all the way to their roots, which Duffy says is a big no-no. “This should not be done because it will weigh your hair down,” she adds. “Instead, only condition from your ponytail down and be sure to comb it through.”
Once out of the shower, you have to identify which type of products will make your hair flat. Duffy says to avoid any products that claim to “smooth” your hair. “Products with any kind of wax or plastic-like silicone, like dimethicone, weigh hair down because they fill in the holes in the cuticle of the hair shaft,” she explains.
For fine hair, it’s best to use volumizing sprays like Sally Hershberger 24k Root Envy Root Boost ($32) or L’Oréal Volumetry Anti-Gravity Volumizing Root Lift Spray ($26). “Take 1-inch sections and spray at the root, then blow-dry with a round brush holding the sections until they are cool before letting them down,” Duffy says.
